GOLDEN, CO – Forty-four-year-old Nathan Geer, the man who was responsible for causing a crash that killed a Golden Police officer in November of 2024, now faces a 13-year prison sentence.
The update was confirmed by The Denver Post, which said the sentencing took place on Wednesday, Jan. 21. Geer was a former professor at Colorado School of Mines who, back in October, pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and assault.
Prosecutors dismissed one count of vehicular assault, third-degree assault, and DUI as part of a plea agreement.
The officer who was killed was 33-year-old Evan Dunn. Dunn and his then partner, Bethany Peterson, formerly known as Bethany Grusing, were investigating a crash that involved a father and daughter at CO 58 and Washington Avenue. Geer crashed into the vehicle occupied by the father and daughter and struck Peterson and Dunn standing outside the vehicle.
The impact of the collision caused Dunn to suffer fatal injuries. Peterson and the father and daughter from the other vehicle were left in serious condition.
On the day of the crash, police conducted a field sobriety test on Geer, who had a BAC over twice the legal limit.
Dunn’s family requested the maximum sentence for Geer at Wednesday’s hearing.
