AURORA, CO – On Friday, The Sentinel confirmed that the man who was responsible for causing a deadly crash on Thursday now faces felony charges of vehicular homicide and eluding police.
Aurora police have identified the man as 25-year-old Don Mai Phan. The events unfolded around 2 p.m., when Phan, driving a white BMW sedan, was going 84 mph in a 65mph zone. A police officer on a motorcycle attempted to pull over Phan.
Phan, however, did not listen and kept driving. He went over several lanes of traffic before taking the exit to Iliff Avenue. A short time later, he ran a red light and crashed into a red Honda Civic sedan, which was turning left. The Honda was split in half, and the Honda driver, a 25-year-old man, died from his injuries at the scene.
Debris from the crash collided with two other vehicles. However, those drivers were spared from injuries.
Phan and his passenger, a 26-year-old man, sustained minor injuries. The officer detained them, and first responders took them to a hospital for treatment of their injuries.
The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s identity.
