WHEAT RIDGE, CO – One adult lost their life, and a toddler was transported to a hospital after a wrong-way collision caused by a suspected DUI driver Thursday.

Wheat Ridge police said the crash took place around 5:15 a.m. on I-70 East near Ward Road. The impaired motorist was driving on the wrong side of the road and crashed head-on into another vehicle. The adult from the hit vehicle was the one to succumb to their injuries. Officers booked the impaired driver into custody and have not announced formal charges against them.

The toddler appears to be in stable condition.

Officers and crews closed the eastbound lanes and told commuters to exit the interstate, then take 6th Avenue, before reentering the freeway. Police had the area closed for several hours before reopening a little after 10:45 a.m.

An investigation into Thursday’s fatal wreck is underway.
