LAPROTE, CO – A big rig driver was arrested after a deadly fiery crash that claimed the life of a 21-year-old man on Saturday, KDVR reports.

The collision was reported before 4:45 a.m. Preliminary details show that a 24-year-old male driver, operating a Freightliner truck, was going north on southbound U.S. 287 when he crashed head-on into a southbound Toyota Corolla.

The force of the collision caused the truck and car to catch fire. The Toyota passenger, a 21-year-old man, was trapped inside the car and died from his injuries.

Fire crews extricated the car driver, a 20-year-old woman, from the car. An ambulance transported her to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Colorado State Patrol arrested the big rig driver. Troopers identified him as 24-year-old David Perez Carillo from New York.

Carillo is being charged with Driving Vehicle on Wrong Side of a Divided Highway, Reckless Vehicular Assault, and Vehicular Homicide.

A full investigation is underway.
