News: 2 men dead, 1 woman hospitalized following pursuit-turned-collision in Weld

WELD, CO – Two men died, and one woman was hospitalized following a pursuit-turned-collision that occurred in Weld on Sunday, 9News said.

The incident began at 4:15 a.m. in the area of East 57th Street and North Garfield Avenue when a Larimer County Sheriff’s Office deputy noticed a vehicle missing a license plate and lights.

The driver of that vehicle notified the approaching deputy and turned off the lights from their vehicle and sped away, just before the deputy conducted a traffic stop. A pursuit was initiated.

The driver went over a speed of 120mph on northbound I-25, took an exit towards Mountain Vista, and continued driving towards Vine Drive/Weld County Road 84. A short time later, the driver lost control of their vehicle and crashed into a power pole off the intersection of Pheasant Crest Drive and Weld County Road 84.

The car overturned and ejected two people. A third person, a woman, was entrapped or pinned and required extrication by fire crews. The impact of the crash led one man to die from his injuries at the scene, and the other man died later at a hospital.

The extricated woman was also sent to a hospital, where her physical condition remains unknown.

Officials have since identified the two men as 19-year-old X-avier Cruz, and 23-year-old Jose Meza, Loveland residents.

LCSO confirmed they did not use the PIT maneuver to cause the crash to occur, and a traffic stop was not actually conducted.
